Pre-cation? The smartest job perk you’ve never heard of

Precation-BeachVacationPre-cation?  A recent Slate article highlights what companies like #Atlassian and #42nd Floors are doing in offering a new perk called a pre-cation or offering a vacation before a job candidate even begins with them. Only these two companies are doing this, but it makes complete sense especially in today’s stressful workplace. Why leave on stressful place and jump into another stressful environment. I’m for it! What’s your take? Do you like? Not like?

Vegan Recipes – Lotus Kitchen – Okra Gazpacho

Lotus KitchenToday’s Vegan recipe, Raw Fresh Okra Gazpacho is a great fusion of Spanish and Africa and is from my upcoming book, The Lotus Kitchen with Gwen Kenneally.

Okra brings a lovely sheen to dishes where it’s front and center and it also is known for its role in healthy digestion. High in fiber and vitamin C, okra is also a fine source of calcium and potassium. Plus, the addition of Thai chilies brings a nice heat to the chilled gazpacho, a lovely juxtaposition that awakens the senses.

Raw Fresh Okra Gazpacho
2 cups fresh okra
2 cups fresh tomatoes
1 cup onions
1 cup cucumber
1 large garlic clove
1/3 olive oil
Juice of two lemons
½ teaspoon Thai chilies, minced
½ cup cilantro, chopped
1/3 cup parsley, chopped
4 cups tomato juice

Place first five ingredients into the bowl of a food processor fitted with the steel blade. Turn to chop and dice setting and begin to puree. While processing, pour in the olive oil and lemon juice. Then add the cilantro and parsley. Lastly add tomato juice and puree briefly to leave a chunky consistency. Refrigerate and serve chilled. Serves 4

The Practice:
Like the tomato, said to heal all of our sufferings and maladies, yoga is a healing practice. We must think of our practice as healing for the mind, body, and spirit. As you eat the tomatoes in the gazpacho, feel the vibration of healing.  Upward Facing Dog Pose is the posture that opens the heart chakra, allowing the heart to heal.  The ability to love and receive love is magnified.

Upward Facing Dog Pose Upward Facing Dog Pose-urdhva-mukha-svanasana
(Urdvha Mukha Svanasana) Instruction:  Lay flat on the mat, stomach down in prone position. Place hands flat on the floor under the arms.  Press the hand into the floor and straighten the arms.  Drop the shoulders from the ears, and lift the hip off the floor, keeping the legs straight, keeping the feet flat connected to the mat.

Monday Meditative Thought – Lessons

This week we’ll continue on our theme of saying yes and to allow us to share and be more of God. By focusing each meditative challenge as an invitation to surrender to the Divine that lives within us. Change the conversation, so Instead of asking God why, we should say, “Bring It On.” After the fire, we will emerge as Gold.

Our Action Plan: Remember that life is a series of opportunities to awaken and activate our true, authentic selves. When you are faced with a challenge, be grateful and say thanks for the opportunity to grow. Keep it top of mind this week.

Friday Affirmation and Body Connection – Be Still and Know

We started our week with meditation focusing around the theme of Being Still and Knowing God’s voice.  For this week’s Affirmation find a place, settle your mind and just for this moment…just for this breath, remember to be still and know that God is everything. And so it is. Amen

For Today’s Body Connection: Remember, yoga is our invitation to slow down and be present. The asana position, also known as the stillness, requires us to stop and connect with the body and/or something greater. During yoga practice, it is the stillness that invites us to know our divine self. The physical practice of yoga is a metaphorical battle with the big self and the ego. Our soul’s desire is to know serenity and peace, to release the chaotic activity of the mental mind. The Bhagavad Gita, sacred scriptures for the yoga practice, say, “When thy mind, that may be wavering in the contradictions of many scriptures, shall rest unshaken in divine contemplation, then the goal of Yoga is thine.” In other words, if we can allow our thoughts to fall into God, we will know our connection to our higher self.

Have a blessed weekend.

Book Review – “Alchemist”

Book The AlchemistI am loving this book! The Alchemist, by Brazilian-born author Paulo Coelho, was first published in 1988 and originally written in Portuguese. Now in over 56 languages,  it’s one of the most inspiring stories of our time. This book takes you on a journey of enlightenment and is a must read for sure. The Alchemist follows the journey of a shepherd boy named Santiago. Who’s recurring dream leads him to believe that it’s prophetic and who then decides to travel to a Romani in a nearby town to discover its meaning. A gypsy woman tells him that there is a treasure in the Pyramids in Egypt. The story winds us through an adventure that teaches us, as only a few stories can, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the events of our lives strewn along life’s path, and, above all, to follow our dreams.

I can’t recommend it enough

Monday Meditative Thought – Be Still and Know

As we begin a new week, we’ll start our meditation by focusing around the theme of Being Still and Knowing God’s voice.  So let’s begin by taking a deep breath and by being still and know that God wants to have a private encounter with you on a daily basis. Know that it is by the practice of meditation that He helps you to embrace your greatness.  When we choose the path of stillness we will know the power that sustains us.

This week’s Meditative Action Plan:  All this week meditate to be still and know that God is God.  It is through the stillness that brings a deeper awareness of our unity with the Holy Spirit.  Take the time to sit in the secret garden of your consciousness.

Friday Affirmation and Body Connection – God Expressing Within

As the weekend is upon us let’s reflect on Monday’s message of “God Expressing Within” and apply it to both a body connection and to affirm.

Remember, exercise is a way of expressing God within. Every time we consciously train our bodies we are doing spiritual work to express more love, light and joy that lives within.  The Essence of life lives within you; therefore every weight you lift is the expression of the Universal presence of God.  Your physical practice is about creating what I call the body-temple that is without the pain and weakness that may hinder your spiritual work.  Recall that after a hard, vigorous training session, our bodies glow. They also release hormones called endorphins, imbuing us with a euphoric feeling that is chemically induced. I call it the God Vibration.  The next time you finish your physical practice, take a moment and acknowledge the God Vibration.  Be still, and once you feel it, recognize it as a space of gratitude.  When we exercise, it becomes a tool for reaching our inner being.

Lastly, let us combine this body connection knowledge and affirm that just for this moment…just for this breath, remember that God lives within your soul and that you can do anything.
