As we embark on this new year, I am filled with hope and a profound sense of purpose. The turning of the calendar reminds us that life is a continuous journey of growth and transformation, both spiritually and physically. I’d like to share with you some thoughts and principles that I believe can help guide us toward a healthier, more balanced existence in 2024 and beyond.
1. Your Body as a Sacred Home

Our physical bodies are the temporary homes of our spirits during our human incarnation. It is our responsibility to care for and nurture this vessel with the same reverence we hold for our spiritual development.

Spiritual growth cannot be separated from our physical well-being. When we set intentions to transform our lives, it must be a holistic approach, aligning our mind and body with our spirit.

3. The Importance of Self-Care

While our souls are inherently whole and complete, our physical incarnation requires ongoing care. We may not live forever, but during our time on Earth, we should strive for the most effective and pain-free life possible.

reflect, honor, and celebrate the invaluable contributions of the African Diaspora and
African Americans. Our community, grounded in love and inclusivity, finds this month to
be a profound opportunity to acknowledge our ancestors and the remarkable legacies
they have left behind.

Gratitude for Black History’s Legacy

Black History Month is not just a time to remember; it’s a period for us to immerse in gratitude. We look back at the struggles, victories, and breakthroughs that have not only shaped the African American experience but have also significantly impacted all Americans. It’s a time to recall the valiant tales of Harriet Tubman’s unwavering bravery, Malcolm X’s powerful oratory, Marcus Garvey’s inspiring leadership, Maya Angelou’s poetic wisdom, Madam CJ Walker’s entrepreneurial spirit, Frederick Douglass’s eloquent advocacy, W.E.B. These innovations, including the clothes dryer (1892), golf tee (1899), modern toilet (1872), mailbox (1891), automatic gear shift (1932), and the life-saving pacemaker (1964), are integral to our daily lives, yet often we overlook their origins.

Hey there, fantastic readers! Buckle up for an exhilarating adventure into self-discovery and empowerment as we dive headfirst into the spirit of Kwanzaa – a celebration pulsating with unity, purpose, and collective strength. I am your guide, Rev. Skip Jennings, and I can’t wait to lead you through the powerful principles of Kwanzaa!

What is Kwanzaa?

Kwanzaa is a vibrant and culturally significant celebration rooted in African-American heritage. Established by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor and activist, Kwanzaa was first celebrated in 1966. The term “Kwanzaa” originates from the Swahili expression “matunda ya kwanza,” translating to “first fruits.”

Dr. Karenga created Kwanzaa (Go to DIGITAL ARCHIVE, “MAULANA KARENGA DETAILS HOW HE CREATED KWANZAA”) to respond to the need for a cultural celebration that could unite the African-American community, fostering unity and pride. Kwanzaa is observed from December 26th to January 1st, aligning with the end-of-year holiday season.

The celebration incorporates seven core principles, known as the Nguzo Saba, which represent values such as unity (Umoja), self-determination (Kujichagulia), collective work and responsibility (Ujima), cooperative economics (Ujamaa), purpose (Nia), creativity (Kuumba), and faith (Imani). Reflecting on and practicing one of these principles is dedicated each day of Kwanzaa.

Kwanzaa ceremonies involve various rituals, including lighting seven candles in a kinara (candleholder), using symbolic decorations, and communal feasts. It serves as a time for families and communities to come together, celebrate their cultural heritage, and reflect on the values contributing to a solid and united community.

Dr. Karenga’s Blueprint: Unveiling the Core Activities Rooted in African Culture

Firstly, holidays serve as a gathering point, drawing people together from diverse locations to reinforce their connections. 

Secondly, these occasions dedicate themselves to expressing gratitude to the Creator and acknowledging the broader creation. This extends beyond thanking for a bountiful harvest, emphasizing the commitment to safeguarding the Earth, the source of the harvest.

The third activity involves commemorating the past, acknowledging and praising those who sacrificed for our fuller and more meaningful lives. Dr. Karenga emphasizes the importance of never forgetting our origins and acknowledging the bridges that facilitated our journey. 

Fourthly, it is a time for reaffirming and recommitting to the highest cultural values. This involves fortifying bonds within families and communities, championing truth and justice, showing respect to elders and ancestors, fostering the growth of children through both support and challenges, taking care of the vulnerable, cultivating a balanced relationship with the environment, and consistently resisting evil while actively promoting the good. This period calls explicitly for recommitment to the seven principles: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity), and Imani (faith).

Finally, the fifth activity of Kwanzaa, following the gathering of people, expressing gratitude for the Creator, commemorating the past, and recommitting to cultural values, is the celebration of the good. This celebration encompasses the good of family, community, and culture, the goodness inherent in life, the environment, history, and humanity’s remarkable journey. It emphasizes the ongoing challenge of continually contributing goodness to the world and preventing any positive elements from being overlooked or lost.

As I say, transformation is a choice!

Renewing the Mind, Body and Spirit
“And be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good, and acceptable, and perfect the will of God.”
~Romans 12:2
Many of my “Aha” moments are downloaded during my daily workouts, which I have come to call “physical spiritual practice.” For example, there are times when a run clears my mind, allowing me to enter a receptive mode and begin catching inner guidance about various facets of my life. The physical practice is a conduit for new ideas to flow and for contemplation to take place within my soul. Those who dance the tango, a vigorous dance of surrender have compared its energy to meditation. The practice of yoga is a form of mental focus, experiencing our capability to improve physical flexibility. Movement cross trains body, mind and spirit, creating a whole-person immersion in the Self.
A good cardio workout focuses our attention on our breath, reminding us that the breath connects us to the soul. Strength training anchors a strong connection to Spirit. Yoga postures remind us not only to be flexible in our body, but in all aspects of our lives. Physical movement enlivens and rejuvenates us and the more we relate to it as a spiritual practice we will become encouraged to include it in our daily routine. Caring for our body temple as the vehicle of our soul represents a deep bow of gratitude to Spirit for the miracle the body is.
I welcome you to consider how you can connect movement to your spiritual practice by inviting yourself to consciously notice if there are “Aha” moments that occur during your exercise routine that you simply haven’t yet recognized. It is our thoughts which separate us from the awareness of God so build your mental strength. The physical practice helps us to restore and heal the temple of the Holy Spirit. Today, as we train the body we empower the mind and we unleash our greatness. Set the intention to connect with God fully, mind body and spirit.
Affirmation: Today, I renew my mind, body, and spirit with the Love of God and movement. I infuse love, during my daily practice. I I am blessed and a blessing. And so it is. Amen
