Foods That Fight Inflammation & Pain

Foods That FightFor those of us getting older, there are certain aches and pains that are difficult for us to get rid of. But of course we don’t always want to take medications to get rid of those pains because those medications also have their effects on the body that aren’t always the best trade off. The best way to get rid of these issues that come up is to eat well. Here are a list of some foods that you should be eating to help fight aches and pains.

  1. Cherries
  2. Edamame
  3. Almonds
  4. Yogurt
  5. Mint
  6. Ginger
  7. Coffee (believe it or not)
  8. Hot peppers
  9. Beets
  10. Kale

Products I Like – Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap

FairTrade Soap-Dr. BronnersI want to share how much I LOVE for Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap. Ever since I started using it my skin has never felt so smooth and the more I used it the more I like it. I love the lather, great skin-feel, and the great after-feel. So who is Dr. Bronner? Dr. Bronner was Emanuel Bronner, a self-styled philosopher, whose message for achieving world peace—the Moral ABC, can be read in the fine print of the colorful packaging. He started the US company in the mid 1940’s and over time it changed and became what it is today  Dr. Bronner’s, unlike Burt’s Bee and Tom’s of Maine, who were bought by Clorox and Colgate-Palmolive, is still run by the Brommer family. The tradition of soap actually goes back further than Emanuel and is currently in it’s fifth generation of soap making! As an INC. magazine mentioned the brand is truly one of America’s great weird brands, that grows more and more successful by being less and less conventional.

My top 6 reasons I LOVE  Dr. Bronner’s Magic soap:

  1. It’s FairTrade, Non-GMO, Certified Vegan, Not Animal Tested
  2. Contain No –  Chelating Agents, dyes, Whitener, nor distilled glycerin
  3. Only uses pure and powerful high-quality certified organic essential oils
  4. Natural vitamin E from sunflower seeds and citric acid from fermented tapioca to protect freshness.
  5. Biodegradable and nature-friendly and the choice for many campers and hikers
  6. Their plastic cylinder bottles are made from 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic.

Dr. Brommer’s can be found at major supermarkets and drug stores, click here for a local near you or order direct here

Please note that I DO NOT receive any compensation from Dr. Bronner’s. I’m just a big fan that likes to share his finds.

Peace and Blessings,

This Week’s Health & Fitness Tip – The Art of Stretching…

Healthy Living
The Art of Flexibility and Stretching…
It’s important that everyone remembers to stretch and work on their muscles before and after a workout, no matter the intensity. Stretching helps get your muscles the shape that they wish to take and helps them recuperate after a long day. Your body feels so much better after a good stretch.

It’s important that when stretching your body, you stretch each portion of your body anywhere between 10-30 seconds. Any longer and you may hurt yourself, any shorter and you’re not allowing your body to fully stretch.

Pay attention to what your body is saying. Whenever you stretch, workout or do anything that requires movement you need to pay attention to how it feels. Making sure your body is in good working order is important and can make a difference when it comes to injuries and preventing them. Be mindful of the stretch, as Skip always says, and make sure that you’re breathing with your body and paying attention.

  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 ribs celery, inner stalks, diced
  • 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1½ cups Pomi chopped tomatoes
  • ¼ cup red wine vinegar (make sure your vinegar is gluten-free if you are gluten-sensitive)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • Pinch cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon fresh thyme (optional but good)
  • 2 tablespoons capers, rinsed and drained
  • 8 chopped pitted kalamata olives
  • ¼ cup minced roasted red peppers (optional)
  • 3 tablespoons pine nuts, lightly toasted
  • 3 tablespoons golden raisins, roughly chopped
  • 2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley
  • 1 teaspoon finely minced garlic

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Cut the eggplant in half lengthwise and score once or twice with a knife (not hitting the skin.) Scoop the eggplant out of the skin and chop coarsely.
  3. Heat 2 tablespoons oil over medium heat in a large, heavy skillet. Add the onion, celery and red pepper flakes and cook for 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes, vinegar, cinnamon and sugar and cook for 5 minutes more. Add the remaining oil, eggplant, capers, red peppers, olives, pine nuts, raisins and parsley and cook for 5 minutes more. Add garlic. Season to taste. Cool to room temperature.

This Week’s Health and Fitness Tip – Ginger, Rosemary and Stretch…

The Shift’s Health & Fitness Tips

Try Some Ginger:
The volatile oils in ginger have long made it a useful herbal remedy for nasal and chest congestion. Pour 2 cups of boiling water over a 1-inch piece of peeled, grated ginger; steep for 10 minutes; and strain.
Add a pinch or two of cayenne pepper to the water and drink as needed.

Sniff Rosemary:
According to some research, catching a whiff of this aromatic herb may increase alertness and improve memory. To stay sharp, try smelling fresh rosemary or inhaling the scent of rosemary essential oil before a test or meeting.

Stretch Often:
If your back is in pain constantly, try and work on morning stretches or little cat stretches throughout the day. We love little stretches since they help align your  back and ease the pain off of your muscles when you’ve been in one position all day.

Find a Workout That Works for You:
No matter what you want to try, whether it’s Piloxing, Yoga, Pilates, Kick Boxing or Running, there’s something for everyone. We’re not all going to love jogging or cycling, but we do have to learn to love to move. When you get moving there are so many amazing things that happen: your mood is better, your eating habits change and your life begins to fall into place when you feel good. Don’t take this lightly, everything can change if you allow it.
