My Biggest Fear

Greetings,

It feels odd to say that I am grateful for the national + international protests for racial harmony and equity that have occurred since Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd were murdered.

Protests happening in neighborhoods outside of black communities.
The Portland protests are beyond anything I’ve ever imagined.
Yet, my biggest fear is that we’re starting to forget.

It’s crucial that after the shock and outrage fades that we continue to stay awake, aware and elevated.
To ensure that change happens.

I feel compelled to keep the dialogue going.

So, I have participated in + facilitated several community healings since George Floyd’s murder.  White, black and non black folks have gathered in circles where they can speak freely about their feelings since these murders happened.  On top of murders of many black people that weren’t caught on video like Ahmaud’s, Breonna’s and George’s were.  Cos if you don’t name it, you can’t heal it.
And, unexpressed grief can cause health issues.

So much is coming to light that needs to be healed + transformed.

The Spiritual Life

Skip has launched a new app where spirituality and fitness meet toward a balance of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of good health, loaded with inspiring content for the mind, body and spirit.

Many of us are affected by how we handle the stress that life brings us.  As we journey through life, it is essential to find our balance.  Our mind can control most of our natural healing capabilities.  For the Mind, I have videos of inspirational talks, such as “The Gratitude Practice”, “The Power of Three, and “How Do We Get Back to Love”, designed to guide you into  feeling more connected to all living things and learn the power of our deep mind.

Keeping our Body healthy includes eating foods that are nutritious, exercising to keep our body strong and understanding the importance of the natural wonders of fresh air, sunlight and clean water.  The app features several videos and  tips on fitness, including “Yoga, Cardio Zen Elevation, Workout, Fitness for Love and Gratitude, which are complimentary recipes for holistic healing to experience wellness on a deeper level.

Our spiritual health is another important part of our overall-wellness.  It connects us to a greater being and helps shed light on life and purpose.   I have put together videos on “Guided Meditation and several podcasts on “The Journey to Spiritual Greatness”, “Self Love, Part I: Learning to Love Ourselves Fully”, “Messages from the Divine,” and “Global Healing During Covid 19″.

When our body, mind, and spirit are aligned, we can achieve optimal wellness through each element.

Spiritual Wellness

Here is my heartfelt advice on how to keep your spiritual wellness raised up during these crazy and uncertain times.

The  Corona Virus pandemic causing COVID 19 has caused widespread concerns, stress, and anxiety.   It also impacted our mental health.  To help manage the chaos and disruption caused by the pandemic,  we need to keep our immune system healthy.

Our immune system does a remarkable job in defending our body against disease -causing micro-organisms.  To function well, it requires balance and harmony not only in a physical sense, but also from a spiritual standpoint.

Spiritual wellness is an important part of our overall well-being.  It gives us a sense of purpose and meaning in life by having a set of values and guiding principles.   It connects us to something greater and higher than ourselves.  By meditating, calm and inner peace can be restored .Meditation trains the mind to focus and re-direct our thoughts to something positive— towards the light at the end of the tunnel.

Finally, how can we help and give back to our neighbors and community during the pandemic crisis?   While volunteering is good for those in need, the giver also benefits on generosity.  It gives us a sense of pride and identity.  The more you feel good about yourself, the more likely you will have a positive outlook and better physical and mental well-being.

Power of Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a psychological process of purposely bringing one’s focus to fully engage with the present moment.  It can be as simple as feeling the pleasantly warmth of the balmy days of late summer.

Practicing mindfulness allows us to think more clearly about ourselves and our surroundings and integrating that awareness to fight life’s stressors and other difficulties. The power of mindfulness does not only change our mindset and perspective, it actually changes the brain, rewiring them towards more positive thoughts and emotions.  Our brain is willful and strong and learning mindfulness can be a part of overall healing and strengthening.

The process of learning mindfulness is a part of the healing and strengthening process.

Self Care

Self-care is important for our total well-being.  Taking some time alone time to meditate, spending time at the beach or walking through the woods lowers our stress level,  improves our mental faculties and reduces anxiety.  It also builds our self-esteem over time as we come to realize that we deserve to have a little time to ourselves.

Self-care also includes having good nutrition which can help reduce the risk of some diseases, including diabetes, stroke, heart disease, reduces high blood pressure, lowers high cholesterol and increase energy level.  A well-balanced diet provides important vitamins, mineral and nutrients to keep the body and mind strong and healthy.

Fitness Trends for 2020

When you think of upcoming trends, the first things that come to mind have something to do with technology. We can expect the fitness industry to dabble in technology by using self-guided training programs, fitness activity tracker, smart watches and virtual trainers.

All In One Fitness is another trend prediction.  Instead of going to different places for your health and wellness needs, we will be seeing more trainers, nutritionist, physical therapist and general practice physicians working together under one roof to maximize the result of a healthy well-being.

Finally, fitness will become a trend of self-care for a more healthy lifestyle focusing on what it does for the body and mind, as opposed to short term goals, such as having chiseled abs.

Physical Fitness and Spiritual Goals

It is important to maintain a healthy balance between your mind, body and soul.   One should aim for a spiritual and healthy body.

Setting goals to achieve a healthy body, mind and spirit puts you in a driver seat.  It helps define your direction and eliminates the amount of distraction that give unnecessary stress and complexities in life.  Instead of being stuck, you become empowered.

There are ways to set goals and achieve them.  First, turn your thoughts into a reality by writing your specific goals down, your purpose and anticipated dates within which to complete them.  Second, you must hold yourself accountable for every step you take.
Make sure they are S.M.A.R.T. goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely.  Anticipate some roadblocks along the way and make a contingency plan for overcoming those by finding the means and resources to stay on course.  Remember you can be anything you want to be if you start with the right mindset.

Good ways to make things better, and will help with back pain.

I know that back injury can sometimes be triggered by simply bending down to pick up a pencil or a violent sneeze, and the back gives out. For many, injury can also be caused by strenuous activities or lifting heavy weights. Whatever the cause may be, back pain is no joke. Luckily, there are various exercises to strengthen the lower back that can help alleviate the pain and also strengthen the core, leg and abdominal muscles.

Yoga therapy is a growing field and scientific evidence has begun to emphasize its efficacy. I have found that Yoga is as effective as standard physical therapy for treating moderate to severe chronic low back pain. Yoga incorporates stretching and relaxation which reduces the tension in stress-carrying muscles. It promotes good posture, balance and body alignment, which helps to maintain the natural curvature of the spine, which is an important factor in reducing or avoiding low back pain.

The Importance Of Meditation

Meditation is an essential part of a focused, balanced and healthy lifestyle.  When you mediate on a regular basis you will begin to see the positive impact it has on lowering levels of stress, anxiety and depression.  As well as increasing your overall clarity of thought throughout the day.  There are also many physical benefits of meditation such as lowering your blood pressure, strengthening your immune system, and improving the quality of your sleep.

It has been found that meditation helps you to control brain waves called alpha rhythms, which helps you to diminish distracting sensory information that leads to your ability to focus. Meditating regularly will reduce the production of stress related hormones like cortisol and increases the production of good chemicals like serotonin.

Move More, Eat and Stress Less

Being physically active, eating a balanced diet and drinking lots of water promote overall good health and mental well-being. Stress affects us all. It’s an automatic response when the body feels or thinks it is under attack, releasing hormones and chemicals to prepare the body for the physical action. When trying to manage stress, do not use the band aid approach.

Doing 30 minutes of walking everyday can boost your mood and reduce stress. Take a moment to stand up and stretch the muscles that store tension. Eating the right foods such as avocados, fatty fish, whole grains, lean protein, handful of nuts, citrus fruits, a mug of warm milk or herbal tea can actually help reduce stress, improve cognitive function, lower blood pressure levels and offer a major benefit to cardiovascular health.

Modern life is so busy. Whatever you do, find an activity that you enjoy, whether its hiking, playing basketball or a meditative meander down the park, eat well and live life to the fullest.
