Self Care

Self-care is important for our total well-being.  Taking some time alone time to meditate, spending time at the beach or walking through the woods lowers our stress level,  improves our mental faculties and reduces anxiety.  It also builds our self-esteem over time as we come to realize that we deserve to have a little time to ourselves.

Self-care also includes having good nutrition which can help reduce the risk of some diseases, including diabetes, stroke, heart disease, reduces high blood pressure, lowers high cholesterol and increase energy level.  A well-balanced diet provides important vitamins, mineral and nutrients to keep the body and mind strong and healthy.

Physical Fitness and Spiritual Goals

It is important to maintain a healthy balance between your mind, body and soul.   One should aim for a spiritual and healthy body.

Setting goals to achieve a healthy body, mind and spirit puts you in a driver seat.  It helps define your direction and eliminates the amount of distraction that give unnecessary stress and complexities in life.  Instead of being stuck, you become empowered.

There are ways to set goals and achieve them.  First, turn your thoughts into a reality by writing your specific goals down, your purpose and anticipated dates within which to complete them.  Second, you must hold yourself accountable for every step you take.
Make sure they are S.M.A.R.T. goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely.  Anticipate some roadblocks along the way and make a contingency plan for overcoming those by finding the means and resources to stay on course.  Remember you can be anything you want to be if you start with the right mindset.

Tai Chi, Chi Gong – The Art of Slowing Down

Tai Chi (Tai ji quan) is an ancient Chinese form of martial art that is now widely used for health benefits and wellness.  The concept of tai ji refers to the yin and yang – two halves that together complete wholeness.  It is a series of low impact, gentle slow motions, taking small steps, focusing your attention as in some kind of a meditation, while you breathe deeply and naturally.

Chi Gong (Qi Gong) is an ancient Chinese form of mediation/exercise.  The concept of Qi means air or breath as in life giving force, or vital energy.  Gong means work or disciplined manner.

The benefits of mind-body practices and exercises are becoming more evident from scientific researches.  Mindfulness mediation have been found to reduce stress, anxiety and depression, treat eating disorders, contribute to cell longevity, reduce inflammation-related genes, improve mood and sleep quality.

This Week’s Meditative Thought – You Are the Light of God

Happy Labor Day! I hope that you all have been enjoying the long holiday weekend. I know I have. This week we kick-off with a focus on letting your inner light shine.  Remember, you are a gift to this planet and that the Universe is keyed to support that gift. It’s what allows us to step out and boldly approach your destiny. Cultivate God’s light through your gifts and talents and let your light shine.

This Week’s Spiritual Assignment:

Throughout this week remember that you are the light of God and that you are meant to let that light shine.  Take a breath, be still, and contemplate what it means to shine your light as God. For the next week; morning, noon, and night take five to ten minutes to meditate and cultivate the light that is you.

Many blessings and have a terrific week.

This Week’s Meditative Thought–The Elevation of Love

Energy of Lovegirl-flying

This week’s focus is on the Elevation of love. In our busy worlds it’s easy to forget that our natural state of being is that of Love. It dwells deep inside and strives to expand,to be more, to know more, and to share more.  If we allow ourselves to be immersed in this  love, we will find that our lives are elevated to a new level. Strive to gain that elevation and enlightenment. We have come into this planet as part of the divine and thus to know our divine selves. The Elevation of love is our jump, our journey to this greatness.

This Week’s Spiritual Assignment

What stops you from flying? What stops you from reaching for the stars? The first step in achieving your goals is recognizing that nothing is impossible. Today, write an affirmation that reinforces “All things are possible.” This can become your new mantra. This can be your motto.

This Week’s Meditative Thought–Moments of Divine Love

Spirit Island on Maligne Lake, Jasper National Park-Spirit Island , Alberta, CanadaYou’ve heard the adage, to be a winner you must put your mind in a winners perspective. In the same vein, every moment of our lives is devine if we open our minds into seeing them as so.

Recognize and Grasp Divine Love

There are times that the Universe appears to us with extraordinary clarity of Divine Love. Recognize and grasp these moments and savory them deliciously. It is important that we take the time to recognize those gems moments when our hearts, minds and eyes are wide open and our hearts are ready to receive, God will always make itself known.

This Week’s Spiritual Assignment

This week I challenge you to take time and journal about ‘Divine Moments’ that have altered your life. Write about the experiences and how they changed you forever. Take your time and be still, meditate, and allow the memories to come to you.

Peace and blessings,

The Lotus Kitchen-Vegetarian in the 7th Moon House Rolls

lotus-kitchen-book-300x300Welcome to The Lotus Kitchen, the title of my upcoming book with co-author Gwen and a place where yoga and vegetarian cooking entwine. This week’s recipe is  Vegetarian in The 7th Moon House Rolls. These house rolls make the perfect snack or appetizer and the hot mustard dip  is a natural decongestant, aids in circulation and helps restore bacterial balance. This dish warms you up inside with the heat and flavor of the ginger, garlic, and mustard.

This week’s yoga pairing is Sun Salutation (Suryanamaskara), which is used to heat the body. The Sun Salutation is designed to pay homage to the sun that heats the planet, and to activate our own internal sun from within.

Looking forward to your comments.

Vegetarian in the 7th Moon House Rolls

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 cup carrots, shredded
  • 1 each red and yellow bell peppers, sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups snow peas, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup green cabbage, shredded
  • 1 cup kale, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced
  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro, de-stemmed
  • 2 teaspoons sake
  • 2 teaspoons white wine vinegar
  • 1/4-cup vegetarian hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chili sauce
  • 1 package pot sticker wrappers
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Peanut or sunflower oil for frying

Instructions:

Heat wok (or stock pot if you are wokless) over high heat until very hot. Add oil then garlic and ginger. Cook for a minute and then add the vegetables and cook about 6 minutes more, stirring frequently. Transfer to a bowl and add sake, rice vinegar and hoisin sauce, chili sauce and cilantro.

To make Moon Rolls, place 2 to 3 tablespoons of vegetable filling in the center of the wrapper. Using your fingers or a pastry brush spread egg all around the edges. Fold in half and pinch the edges tightly. They will resemble little half moons. Wipe the wok clean. Heat 3 cups peanut or sunflower oil on high heat. Drop egg rolls in batches of three and cook for one minute, or until golden brown. Remove with slotted spoon, place on a cookie sheet lined with paper towel to drain oil and serve immediately with dipping sauce.

Dipping Sauce:

  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1 inch fresh ginger, finely minced
  • ½ cup apricot preserves
  • ½ cup raspberry preserves
  • 4 tablespoons rice vinegar (and/or sake) In a small bowl whisk together until smooth.

Serve with: Chinese hot mustard. Everyone can create their own dipping sauce by blending the two.
