Skip’s Weekend Affirmation –The Elevation of Love

keep-calm-use-an-affirmationAffirmations are great at cleansing to your soul and are most effective when they hold some type of truth or resonance for you. As I’m on the road this weekend  this week’s affirmation; The Elevation of Love, hits all the right spots.

Find your quiet place and just for this moment…just for this breath,

God is my safety net and I fly high. I know Spirit will catch me if I fall so I am not afraid to try. My life is free to live to its fullest and I am empowered by my greatness. I am free to take to the air and follow my bliss. And so it is. Amen.

Peace and Blessings,

Movie Recommendation – Kingsman The Secret Service

kingsman-the-secret-service

For an alternative those of you who didn’t feel like seeing Fifty Shades of Grey, Kingsman The Secret Service is likely to be a lot more fun and won’t require you to blush as much. Kingsman is one of those come hither, James Bond-ish type films full of Colin Firth swag you have been waiting for.

The story revolves around Gary “Eggsy” Unwin (Taron Egerton), whose late father secretly worked for a spy organization, and who lives in a South London housing estate with a life seemingly bound for one behind bars. However, dapper agent Harry Hart (Colin Firth) recognizes potential in the youth and so recruits him to be a trainee in the secret service. Meanwhile, villainous Richmond Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson) launches a diabolical plan to solve the problem of climate change via a worldwide killing spree. Everyone loves a spy movie with some old fashioned style and a twist of new world action to it. The best part of Kingsman The Secret Service, is that it’s been one of those films teased for the last couple of years. Full of action, fancy cars and some funny English humor, Kingsman delivers. I give it four stars easy for the entertainment factor. However, there is a bit of blood spatter so for the queasy ones… just be careful.

The Lotus Kitchen- Quinoa Tabouli

Welcome to The Lotus Kitchen, the title of my upcoming book with co-author Gwen Keannelly and a place where yoga and vegetarian cooking entwine. This week’s recipe is Quinoa Tabouli.

The Lotus Kitchen-Quinoa Tabouli

  • 2 cups quinoa, cooked
  • 1 cup chopped parsley
  • 1/2 cup chopped scallions
  • 2 tablespoons mint
  • 2 tablespoons basil
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ¼ cup olives, sliced

Place all ingredients in a mixing bowl and toss together lightly. Chill for 1 hour or more to allow flavors to blend. Garnish with olives Serves 4

The Practice:

Traditionally tabouli, also spelled tabbouleh, is an Arab salad filled with Mediterranean delight. When exploring the connection of tabouli and yoga, we are reminded of what yoga is all about – the practice of seeing the Oneness of two things that appear to be separate. When connecting India and The Middle East, what better way than to do it with food and yoga. It takes a practice to experience the Oneness Consciousness.   We must begin to see what cultures have in common instead of what separates us.

Thread the Needle Pose (Parsva Balasana) Instruction:

If you have stiffness and pain, this pose can provide relief by stretching and opening the shoulders, chest, arms, upper back and neck. It releases the tension that is commonly held in the upper back between the shoulder blades. This pose also provides a mild twist to the spine, which further reduces tension. Begin on all fours (table pose), with hands shoulder width apart. Turn the right palm upwards and thread the right hand underneath the left arm. Bring the right shoulder and the right side of the face toward the floor. Rest on the right cheek for three long breaths. Bring the left arm up off the floor and send it straight up towards the ceiling, releasing the left shoulder. Bend the left elbow and see if you can reach around to hold your waist or the right thigh. Stay here for six to twelve breaths. To get out of the pose plant your left hand firmly on the ground and use the weight of it and return to table pose. Repeat on the other side.

This Week’s Meditative Thought–The Elevation of Love

Energy of Lovegirl-flying

This week’s focus is on the Elevation of love. In our busy worlds it’s easy to forget that our natural state of being is that of Love. It dwells deep inside and strives to expand,to be more, to know more, and to share more.  If we allow ourselves to be immersed in this  love, we will find that our lives are elevated to a new level. Strive to gain that elevation and enlightenment. We have come into this planet as part of the divine and thus to know our divine selves. The Elevation of love is our jump, our journey to this greatness.

This Week’s Spiritual Assignment

What stops you from flying? What stops you from reaching for the stars? The first step in achieving your goals is recognizing that nothing is impossible. Today, write an affirmation that reinforces “All things are possible.” This can become your new mantra. This can be your motto.

Skip’s Weekend Affirmation – Divine Love

keep-calm-use-an-affirmationThis week’s  affirmations: Divine Love

Affirmations are great  cleansing to your soul and are most effective when they hold some type of truth or resonance for you. Meditate on your Divine Love and pick your focal point for this affirmation. Feel free to modify it to your own situation.

Find your quiet place and just for this moment…just for this breath…

I walk with the divine Greatness and I co-create my world, exactly how Spirit sees fit. I rest with a “peace of mind” that I am right where I’m supposed to be. I live great devine moments with every breath I take. God breathes new life in me every second of my existence. And so it is.

Peace and blessings,

Movie Recommendation – Seventh Son

Seventh SonOkay so first, look at that face. Just look. Who isn’t in love with Ben Barnes? Okay, maybe just me but he was a pretty good reason to go see it right? He was wonderful in the dramatization of the novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, as Mr. Gray. But in Seventh Son?

The movie premise is cool since it was based on the popular novel; The Spook’s Apprentice (titled The Last Apprentice: Revenge of the Witch in America) by Joseph Delaney. The story centers on Thomas Ward, a seventh son of a seventh son, and his adventures as the apprentice of the Spook. Unfortunately, the visuals leaned a little too much like Hansel and Gretel if you ask me. Then there was the acting which wasn’t so great, personally I couldn’t understand one word that the main star, Jeff Bridges, was saying. His muffled voice through out the movie made it difficult to enjoy the movie when I was trying to decipher his speech. My vote on Seventh Son? It was entertaining to a point, but definitely not worth the $13 to see it in theaters. Wait until it’s on Redbox or streamed on Netflix or Amazon.

The Lotus Kitchen-Black Bean and Corn Salad

The Lotus Kitchen Black Bean and Corn Salad

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups black beans (drained and cooked al dente)
  • 3 cups roasted white corn (cooked al dente)
  • 1 red onion (raw)
  • 1 red pepper (raw)
  • 1 cup cilantro
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 jalapeno, minced
  • 2 chopped avocados (firm, not overly ripe)
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • ½ cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1/3 cup of lime juice
  • Arugula lettuce

Instructions:

Combine black beans, corn, red pepper, cilantro, jalapeno, and avocado. Add olive oil, vinegar, and lime juice and mix together. Place on a bed of lettuce and serve. Serves 4-6

The Practice:

Beans and corn sprout goodness. Like a long planting season, after practicing Yoga for a while we begin to see the harvest from our hard work. The sprouts from a practice can be: good eating habits, better perception of one’s self, and a better awareness of the body. These are all fruits of the labor. Part of crop harvest is the practice of gratitude. Gratitude is the highest appreciation for what is good in your life. After a strong and powerful session of yoga, endorphins are released, which can cause a feeling of euphoria or a sense of gratitude. The practice is to maintain gratitude, while preparing this salad. Recognize the harvest of the fruits in your life, and when you sit and partake, be grateful for your life.

The Easy Pose Meditation Instruction:

Sitting with your buttocks on the mat, cross your legs with your ankles under your thighs. Rest your hands on your knees, pressing both hips towards the floor. Close your eyes and breathe. Allow your thoughts to open to knowledge and learning. Set the intention to know and feel gratitude.

This Week’s Meditative Thought–Moments of Divine Love

Spirit Island on Maligne Lake, Jasper National Park-Spirit Island , Alberta, CanadaYou’ve heard the adage, to be a winner you must put your mind in a winners perspective. In the same vein, every moment of our lives is devine if we open our minds into seeing them as so.

Recognize and Grasp Divine Love

There are times that the Universe appears to us with extraordinary clarity of Divine Love. Recognize and grasp these moments and savory them deliciously. It is important that we take the time to recognize those gems moments when our hearts, minds and eyes are wide open and our hearts are ready to receive, God will always make itself known.

This Week’s Spiritual Assignment

This week I challenge you to take time and journal about ‘Divine Moments’ that have altered your life. Write about the experiences and how they changed you forever. Take your time and be still, meditate, and allow the memories to come to you.

Peace and blessings,

-Skip
